A note from the personal effects of Jack Goldstein sticks to an old film box. The Super 8 footage seems to be a film document, but can hardly be interpreted. Place, time, and authorship cannot be specified and, due to the missing data, the viewer is kept in the dark. As a result, the investigations are ongoing. The film scenes, which show a naked woman, elicit additional questions.

Jack Goldstein, born in Montreal, Canada, moved to Los Angeles with his family as a child. He was known as a performance artist, experimental filmmaker and painter, embracing minimalist movements and eventually “salon painting,” spending his time in the 1970s and 1980s between New York City and Los Angeles. A foundational member of the group of artists part of the Pictures exhibition at Artists Space in New York, in 1977, his contemporaries included artists like Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo. After a swift decline in interest in his paintings, Goldstein eventually left New York for good, in the ‘90s, moving back to California. He committed suicide in 2003.
